Chris Davis 0/4 3K The sky is falling! Chris Davis didn’t hit a home run today!! Ok, the sky isn’t falling but I don’t think it’s out of the question to wonder how long this power surge can really last. Now, I don’t doubt this guy can hit 50 homers over the season, but his pace is insane right now. Not a sell high, because I think he’ll continue to rake, it just won’t be what you’ve seen over the last few weeks. I’d explore the possibilities IF I had a dire need. Steady the course, son! Here’s what else I saw in fantasy baseball yesterday…

Edward Mujica 0.2 IP 4H 2ER BS – Josh Hamilton comes alive to kill Mujica’s save opportunity. Not much to see here, he’s a great closer, isn’t in danger of losing his job, and could have another 20 saves for a perpetually contending Cardinals team.

Cole Hamels 7IP 5H ER 8K – Hamels pitched a gem yesterday, and is a guy that could really help some teams as they go into the stretch run seeking a playoff spot. His ERA is still ugly, but he looked like his vintage self against Pittsburgh, and I like him to have a huge second half. As long as he can limit his opponents to three runs a game, He shouldn’t have as many hard luck losses as he’s had this year. It’s almost like the Phillies won’t score when he pitches. They bucked that trend yesterday, and hopefully will continue to do so going forward.

Raul Ibanez 4/5 R 3RBI Ibanez continues to defy time, and is on pace to break his career high of 34 home runs. Scoop him up in your leagues and ride this one out. Guys like this tend to get overlooked and dropped for the flavor of the week, but for all the hype, a lot of the young guys don’t pan out. Ibanez seems to be sturdy as ever and is a great veteran to add in all leagues while he’s hot.

Matt Kemp 2/5 2RBI HR Kemp really seems to be turning a corner since returning from the disabled list. He’s hit two home runs in the last week, doubling his total for the year. I think he’s a good candidate to perform better in the second half, honestly because he can’t be any worse than he was in the first half. I think the power and RBI opportunities will present themselves, and so he’s a great addition to your team if you can still buy low.

Austin Jackson 4/5 3RBI HR Jackson has been hitting well since his return from the disabled list, a great thing for owners who had lost him for a good stretch of the early season. Ajax hasn’t really shown himself to be a home run hitter, so don’t expect too many games like this, but he is seeing the ball well, which can only be a good thing.  The good news is that Jackson is sitting squarely on top of one of the most potent offenses in all of baseball, so he’ll have plenty of runs scored from there.

Dan Straily 7IP H 3BB 6K Pitched a gem yesterday, granted it was against the Cubs, but a great performance nonetheless. Where do the A’s get all these pitchers from? They take guys that would falter in other organizations and make them desirable for the trade market. It’s a beautiful system they’ve got up there. Straily has been back and forth from the minors recently, but it’s procedural. Just to add a reliever here or there if the team won’t need a fifth starter. He’ll stick in the rotation, and as long as he does, he can shore up the back end of your fantasy rotation as well.

Travis Wood 6IP 3H BB 5K Travis Wood keeps on dealing, but is not getting the run support from his offense that he deserves. Either that or the bullpen blows the lead and gets cheated out of another win. Now, I’m skeptical for how long this can go on, but Wood did have a pretty good pedigree before Dusty Baker murdered his arm with overuse, so it doesn’t really come out of nowhere either. I think his ERA will rise some, but he’ll be serviceable the rest of the way. Just don’t expect many wins.

Lorenzo Cain 2/4 4RBI HR Cain hit a grand slam, his fourth home-run of he year off Ubaldo Jimenez. Ever since George Brett took over as the hitting coach a few weeks ago, the Royals lineup is looking better and better. Cain seems to have found a better swing along with his teammates, and if he has more games like this, he could work his way out of an outfield rotation with Jarrod Dyson and David Lough. It’s a situation to monitor.
